E-commerce Website
Now, is creating an e-commerce website easy? Here the answer is a bit tricky. I guess the short answer is yes, it is. However, creating an e-commerce website that looks good, is free of errors, offers original and attractive features, is visited daily by a great number of customers, ranks high on search engines, and converts a good percentage of visitors into customers is not that easy.
Many people think that creating an e-commerce website involves getting a domain name, inserting a few products in a site and wait for orders to arrive. Then they wonder why they get very few visitors and make little to no sales. In the worst of cases, they end up taking down their website because they don't make enough sales to even cover the hosting costs.
An e-commerce website is not magic, it's a marketing tool, and as such, it has to be planned, designed, and implemented in a way that fits the target market of a company. In that sense, it's no different than any other advertising media. What do you sell and who do you sell to? These two questions have to be satisfactorily answered before you even start to think what kind of e-commerce website you want.
What's the image of your company and your products? If you sell a product that is identified with a sophisticated lifestyle, then a page that's simple looking will not get you any customers. Do you sell a product that's aimed for teenagers? Then your page must be flashy looking, modern, and even somewhat rebellious to capture their attention.
In addition, testing is very important but often overseen. Many people just take a quick look at their finished webpage and then go live. However, you must make sure that every image looks fine, and that every link and button works fine. Many times, it's a broken link in the purchasing process that keeps sales from happening. Therefore always test your site thoroughly before going live. It would be better to have someone else do that for you.
So, as you can see, creating an e-commerce website that really makes sales is not that easy. That's why more and more people are choosing to outsource the job these days.
